WORKSHOPS

Phonopoetica
sound + poetry as intermedia practice I

A generative, interdisciplinary workshop for engaging language as a sonic material. Using the voice as a primary vehicle for poetry, students will revel in the visceral and the embodied as a basis for the production of language. Performers, writers and novices will dimensionalize their practice through intermedia play, pushing the elastic bounds of writing and sound. During this intimate course, we will work with improvisation, prompts, scores, cross-media translations, collaboration, musical composition, phonetic writing, vocal register, polyvocalism, and of course, poetry. We will develop our own vocalisms and page-based sonics while delving into the fields of sound poetry, voice art, concrete poetry, performance writing, and poets theatre. We will read and listen to Caroline Bergvall, Jackson Mac Low, Cecilia Vicuña, Katalin Ladik, Jennifer Walshe and Carla Harryman, among other writers and performers. For all who are drawn to the voice as material for scripts, scores, and stanzas – who wish writing to be improvisational and performance to be poetry.

We will engage and produce materials in and outside of class meetings, where focus will be on production and exploration rather than critique. At the end of the class, there will be a semi-public or public event for workshop students to perform their works.

Polyphonics
sound + poetry as intermedia practice II

This advanced workshop explores polyphony through a variety of practice-based approaches, and is meant for former phonopoetica students to continue deepening their practice in relation to the voice. It may also be open to individuals who work heavily with their own voice and have some knowledge of or affinity with the sound poetry tradition. During the first half of the course, students will focus on developing vocal characters through study and experiment. During the second half, students will compose vocal pieces for multiple speakers to perform. Classtime will be spent with generative exercises, as well as presenting work produced during the week for feedback from the group. There will be daily and weekly assignments, and these may at times be tailored to individual students. Although the workshop prioritizes production over outside materials, we will also have time to touch on further influences including but not limited to Hannah Weiner Clairvoyant Journal, Leslie Scalapino At Dawn Fishing Among the Tules, and the vocal work of Chris Mann. For all who wish to expand their practice by focused, extended work with polyphony in a myriad of forms.
